Art Challenge: Expressive Faces

Journal Prompt:  What I See Clearly Now...

All I can think of when I read this week's prompt is "I can see clearly now, the rain is gone..."  And then of course that is stuck in my head for the rest of the day!  Not a bad song but after several days of nothing but, it gets a little old.

Anyway!  On to the journal page...

Ah faces.  My old nemesis.  Little known fact about me... I used to do portraits.  In oils, no less!  But portraits are something I haven't done in a very long time and you know that old saying?  "If you don't use it, you lose it."  It's so very true!  I'm slowly finding my way back to faces.  It's a long slog but one I am enjoying.  I'm finding each one a little easier than the last.  One thing that I don't want to do any more in my art is any real form of "photo realism".  It's just not  my style these days so I'm trying to keep it all a little whimsical, a little more "mixed media" with slightly out of proportion bits and more imperfections.

So this page started out as a sketch from an image I found on Pinterest.  A lovely face in black and white with hair blowing all over the place.  Excellent starting point.  I really love love love how this face turned out.  I love the shading and tones.  I'm getting much better at it than I was a few months ago.  I'm using my Neocolor II & Inktense pencils a lot.  And while I think using those is doing wonders for my blending, it's not doing any great favors to my journal!  I know these Dylusions journals are designed for spray ink & water techniques but I would love to know how Dyan Reavely keeps her journals from buckling and warping.  My pages get pretty thin by the end of it.  Now, I know this isn't water color paper and for what I'm doing I really ought to be using watercolor paper.  I do know that.  Don't care.  Still loving this journal.

I'm actually really excited for the next four prompts for this month.

I'm linking up to Kim Dellow's Show Your Face Blog Hop.  So hop on over there for some more Fantastic Faces!

See y'all next time around.
