Art Challenge: Layered (using multiple mediums)

Journal Prompt:  Speak to Your Younger Self - What Advice Would You Offer?

This week's journal page is inspired by a painting done by Suzi Blu.  I just love everything about her art.

Anyway,

I sketched out a woman clutching a child - or a version of my younger self.  Either way you choose to interpret it.  I even like to think of it as me clutching my daughter.  I used my Neocolor II's and Inktense pencils for the faces and hair and for the first layer of the background.  I then used gesso sparingly over the background and went back over it with more Neocolor II's, including the drips.

The swirl stamp is a hand carved one by me stamped with Distress Paint in Spun Sugar.  The triangles are another hand carves stamp by me stamped with Heidi Swapp Archival Dye Ink in Teal.  I used Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink and a crackle texture pad (for clay) to create the crackle effect in the background.

I used my Stabilo pencil as well as my Uni-Ball Signo 207 Bold (black) gel pen to write phrases that I wish someone had told me daily, regularly, and often as a kid.  I try to tell my daughters these phrases daily, regularly, and often now.

I added a few flower doodles with my Uni-Ball pen and a couple of strips of washi tape and couldn't think of anything else this page needed.

I really like this page's simplicity.  Even though I did layer and I did use more than one or two things, I love just how simple it really is.  This is a page that I need to look at every day and repeat these things to myself.  They are words we all need to hear.  Hear enough to finally start believing.

You are beautiful.  You are loved.

I'll see you next time!

Until then,

  2. I love the feeling of love and security I get with this. How you have made them look so familiar. Your young self or your daughter..perfect and lovely narrative to give it life.
