The 12 Art Journals - My Spread

A group of us on Instagram are doing a year long handmade travel journal, and yes, there are 12 of us participating.  I've mentioned this project at least once before now.  The way we have it set up is that the month of January will be dedicated to creating our own art journal spread.  This way we can sort of set the tone of our journals and also have a little bit of extra time to actually create them.

Here is my spread in my journal.

Supplies:

Dylusions Ink Spray - Calypso Teal & Bubble Gum Pink
Distress Spray - Evergreen Bough
Stamps - 100 Proof Press, Unity Stamp Co, Tim Holtz
Tim Holtz Remnant Rubs
Acrylic Ink - Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Acrylic & Liquitex Basics
Derwent Inktense Pencils
Faber-Castell Watercolor Crayons
Ranger Archival Ink - Jet Black
Faber-Castell Gelatos - Cotton Candy
Liquitex Basics Gesso
The Crafters Workshop Stencils
Recollections Stencils
Tim Holtz Stencil - Splatters
Faber-Castell Stampers Big Brush Marker - White
India Ink - Black
Old Book Paper
Washi Tape
Faber-Castell Pitt Pen - black
Sakura Souffle Pens

I started out with a base layer of Dylusions Inks, Distress Spray Stain, and some funky stamps, but I wasn't sure where I could really go from there.  I started by making large gesso circles with a stencil and just went from there.  The only part of the original layout still left is the funky little stamped owl on the bottom right corner of my flap.

Y'all know how much I love how it turned out.  I had someone on Instagram ask me how I find my inspiration to make journal spreads like this.  And the truth is, I don't really go looking for it.  I honestly just pick a few colors, maybe a couple of stamps or stencils, and start layering stuff.  I fake it until I make it!  It's a running joke with my local crafty friends and I - I am queen of layers!  If I don't like how something looks, I will brayer a layer of paint over it.  And I never stop there!  I love making things poke through and have just a peek of something showing through.

By the time y'all  read this post, this journal will have already made it to its next destination.  I am so excited to see what everyone makes and can't wait to get this journal back at the end of the year - all filled up with amazing and awesome art from wonderful friends I made last year!

Happy Creating y'all!
