Alphabet Soup - Artist Trading Cards

It's another Alphabet ATC Swap!  I had just just just started making ATCs last time this swap came around, and I feel (and hope) like I've come a long way from then.  I wanted this set of ATCs to reflect the changes I've made in the past 6 months as an artist.

I started with some vintage dictionary paper and glued it down to ATC bases.

I then sketched out my letters (yep - all hand lettered) and painted the negative space with Claudine Hellmuth Studio paint in Charcoal Black.  I chose this particular paint because it is very flat and I wanted a flat paint in order to draw on it with my white pen.

Once everything was nice and dry I started doodling!  I used my Pentel Sunburst white gel pen until the ink ran out, then switched to my Uni-Ball Signo Angelic white gel pen until its ink ran out!  I killed two pens and still wasn't finished, but thankfully I had a white Gelly Roll pen to finish out the set.
Yes, I have ordered new pens!  Since the Pentel pen is out of production (*sniff sniff*), I ordered a set of Uni-ball Signo Broad Point pens - the Japanese ones of course.  I've seen these used and I have used the Angelic one (it's a smaller point) and I am happy to state for the record that these are the best white gel pens ever made!!  Thankfully you can get them from Amazon and they're shipped through Amazon rather than waiting forever from them to actually come from Japan.  My first Angelic pen took weeks to get here because it came from the other side of the planet!

On each letter, I chose a word that began with that letter and that spoke to me.  I didn't realize there are so many X words!  And just so you don't have to go rushing around for a dictionary, Xenium means: a present given among the ancient Greeks and Romans to a guest or stranger and especially to a foreign ambassador.  Since these ATCs are gifts of art I thought it appropriate!

I told Elizabeth that I was sitting out of her next Alphabet swap.  After making a set of 26 for the swap, I was overly ambitious and made an entire set of these for myself.  That's 52 cards - a whole friggin' deck!  My hand is exhausted.  But these are definitely fun, quirky, and zany cards.  I know that this set will be completely different than any of the others.  Plus I am loving working white on black.

Hope your creative juices are flowing...

Happy Creating!
